As part of our ongoing spotlight series, Meet Fabio!
Fabio crafts standout work across brand, UX and UI.
He collaborates with our project management team to shape smart project plans, syncs with devs for smooth handovers and keeps things sharp with thorough QA – all with a keen eye and a creative edge.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I’m lucky that 90% of my day is mostly spent designing. What keeps it exciting is the variety of both the work and the clients. One week I might be creating a new brand from scratch, and the next I’m designing a full digital platform, from UX to UI. There’s always something new to dive into.
When I’m not designing, I’m usually collaborating with project managers on briefs or working closely with developers, handing over designs and figuring out the best solutions for each digital project.
How did you get into design?
I was always interested in art, drawing, painting, and generally making things. So I always knew from a young age that I wanted a career that felt creatively fulfilling.
From there, my path into design was fairly straightforward, and I followed an academic route to lead me here. The toughest part was figuring out which area of design to focus on, because I was genuinely interested in so many. From physical products to digital experiences.
In the end, my curiosity for technology played a big part in the decision, bringing me into the digital world.
What’s the best thing about working with Athlon
The best thing about working at Athlon has to be the flexibility. Being able to work remotely has made a huge difference. I’ve loved having the chance to go back home to Madeira now and then, working with an amazing view in the background.
The people here are another great thing. Everyone’s so positive and genuinely supportive, which creates a great work atmosphere. Even when I first joined as a junior, I felt like my input mattered.
This is what has kept me at Athlon for the past five years.
“Bravest thing I’ve done?
Taking a last minute flight to a job interview that led to my first job. This was before Zoom interviews were a thing! A week later, my life had completely changed.
— Fabio Luz, Senior Designer

Career highlight so far?
My next project!
What do you geek out on?
I geek out on anything cycling related. It’s my go-to way to disconnect and recharge. I’m also really into movies, especially indie cinema. I love discovering unique stories and perspectives you don’t always see in mainstream films.
I’m also obsessed with history, especially figuring out how different societies came to be and why they work the way they do.
What do you get up to when you’re not plugged in?
If I’m not working, you’ll probably catch me on a bike exploring the trails around London or weightlifting. These two activities help keep me sane and completely disconnect from day to day life.
Travelling is another big thing for me. It’s a way to recharge and get inspired.
I also enjoy casual gaming mostly for storytelling. It’s just fun to get lost in a different world.
What would your superpower be?
Responding to my WhatsApp messages 😬
